What Does the Sewer Line Pipe Bursting Process Look Like?

Pipe bursting is a trenchless method for replacing buried pipelines, typically water, sewer, or gas, without needing to dig a trench. Here’s how it works:

• Dig Access Pits: Two small pits are dug: a launch pit where the bursting begins and a receiving pit where the process ends.
• Burst Old Pipe: A special tool called a bursting head or expander is pulled through the existing pipe. The head is larger than the diameter of the old pipe, so it breaks apart as it moves through.
• New Pipe Pulled Into Place: Attached behind the bursting head is the new pipe—usually made of high-density polyethylene. This pipe is pulled right into the empty space made by the bursting head.
• Reconnection and Testing: Once the new pipe is in place, it’s connected to the existing service lines or main, and the system is pressure tested to ensure proper installation and no leaks.
• Pits Are Backfilled: The small pits are filled in, and the area is restored to its original condition as closely as possible.
